This month we are going to talk about passwords. We go into a little detail about the point of a password, mention some added security you can add to a password, ask the question ‘should passwords be different for all your accounts?’ and Mike tells a lie.

Having problems hearing us? Sorry 🙁 . Here are some things to try:
1. Turn up both your computer volume and the volume on the YouTube video (hover over it while it’s playing to get the volume control in the bottom left) and turn up the sound on your speakers.
2. Click the “CC” button on the video (again hover over the video while it’s playing) this will turn on auto-generated subtitles

Thank you for your video on passwords.
Amazingly, I think I can offer a suggestion that may help some people with the “remembering” problem.
Try using a line from one of your favourite poems or songs, and simply use the first letter of each word. This can give one a long, but easily remembered password. One can strengthen this by selecting one or two letters that can be substituted with a symbol or perhaps an upper case letter.
Hope someone finds this idea useful!

Hi Alan, good tip 🙂 . PAsswords are a right pain and if you can find a way to have easily remembered ones (if you don’t want to use a password Manager) then that’s ace. Just remember not to use the same password more than once.

Sorry I had my sound on maximum and although I do not have a hearing loss I could hardly hear you – it was such an effort I did not get through it all.

Hi Mary, I’m so sorry we had problems with the sound, on my list for next week is to do a write up of what we talked about, we have had a large number of comments about the sound. We are going to do *something* about it for next time. It’s not ideal but Subtitles on this video are working (mostly) click the CC button on the video when you hover over it.
Look out for the write-up next week, the general gist is :
1. don’t use the same password on more than 1 account
2. use a good password
3. Lie if they ask you questions like “what’s your mothers maiden name”

I have watched the video again with the sounds increased. I also watched it without the sub-titles so I was not distracted.
I was able to follow you better but realised that you have a dialect which does make it more difficult for someone with less hearing. For me, I am still in the learning stage with my Cochlear Implant and am finding that Higher sounds are more difficult for clarity and Tim’s voice comes over lower than yours. This is probably why I am able to follow Tim better, but yes, he does talk a little slower.
You are obviously more nervous than Tim but. if you would look into the camera more when giving any details, this would help a lot. Most people with any hearing loss do also need to lip- read and that is why we ask people to face us so we can see there lips moving.

I wonder if you could do me a favour please, I wonder if you could try watching the video again, and try turning up both your computer volume and the volume on the video player (hover your mouse over the video and look in the bottom left for the volume slider)
We had a play with the video last night and it looks like YouTube turns the volume down on the player by default, It’s something I’m looking into trying to change.
If you don’t have time then no worries.

I appreciate your new idea of videos to explain things, much easier to get to grips with. However could you please make the sound levels louder! We oldies don’t all have good hearing, in fact we could not hear Tim’s short video about Facebook and the subtitles were in Spanish, good to know you have such a wide fan base!

I’m so sorry we had problems with the Audio on these videos and that some of the subtitles were in Spanish! (random!) Are you in Spain just out of interest?

Very interesting – thank you. Quite the TV stars!! I really must apply myself to working out how to set up Last Pass. Trouble is that it always takes ages for me to get to grips with such things – I am sure you have a link somewhere??

Barclays Bank needs your membership number, which you can get it to remember, your debit card inserted and then your 4 number password before it generates the one off password. It needs the belt and braces, 4 numbers not being at all secure!

Ahh yes, the multi-step login, it’s still all a bit clunky but better safe than sorry!
Sadly 4 numbers are not secure 🙁 which I often puzzle about while using cash machines… but there you go!

I am profoundly deaf but luckily I recently had the Cochlear Implant and this is working very well and I am able to follow Tim very well. Mike’s voice is not so clear however I can get sub-titles on the video by clicking on the 1st button at the bottom left of the video screen, so I am suprised to read the comment made by Martin McLoughlin. The information given re passwords is very informative and helpful thanks to both of you.

Thanks for the comments, I have listened to it back on a couple of types of speakers and it is quite quiet, and I do speak quite fast (I’m super nervous so I need to practice or put a massive sign up above the camera that says SLOWLY, CLEARLY, LOUDLY) 🙂

Interesting. I’ve made some notes. I do write down my passwords as I have so many, and if my family needed to get into anything on my computer they would need to know how.

I am very hard of hearing. I found both Mike and Tim spoke too quickly and too quietly, so I was able to hear and understand about one word in three.
I realise that subtitles are impossible on such a video, but a printed resume would be invaluable.

I’m so sorry, I’m very new to this and I’m still learning what works and what doesn’t, we obviously need to address the audio quality, I will do some research and see what we can do to improve on it for next time.
There should be subtitles on this video, press play on the video and press the CC button that appears at the bottom of the video (hover your mouse over the video if it doesn’t show right away). They are not perfect as they were auto-generated. When I get a moment I will go through and correct any obvious mistakes.
Again I’m so sorry the video was too quiet, and I will have a chat with Tim and see what we can do about a printed version too.

Thanks for an interesting guide to how to make passwords more secure. As I was hacked in the past, your video made it clear that my pathetic word was far too obvious so I have been more careful since then.
My trouble has been that if I change a password, I can’t always remember the new one because the former one is still remembered more easily but I will follow some of your hints and hope they work better than just another commonly used word that could be guessed.

Ahhh yes, having a strong password is the best thing you can do to protect your online account. Having a strong password especially for your email address is really important.
I use a program called LastPass which you can read about here https://www.pcinnercircle.co.uk/index.php/2016/09/how-to-stop-remembering-passwords-using-lastpass/ it looks more complicated than it is, but it’s basically a way to have a password that looks like this ‘0urjfKFJE@:>Ddft$4fG’ without having to remember it or write it down (or you can just have a password like that and write it down).
As you use Gmail I would also encourage you to check out their 2-factor login, it means if someone knows/guesses your password they still can’t log in… https://www.google.com/landing/2step/
