Applies to: Anyone interested in Google Earth/maps. Works on most devices and browsers (not Internet Explorer).
Google Earth is a way to explore the world from your computer/tablet/phone in 3D. It used to require a download but after years of development, Google Earth is now in the web browser…
The new version works in all modern web browsers. MS Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari (not on Windows). It does not work in Internet Explorer (any version).

If you want more details you can read the full announcement from Google here: https://blog.google/products/earth/welcome-home-new-google-earth/

Dive right in:

If you want to dive right in and press some buttons (which is what I did) you can find Google Earth here  https://earth.google.com/web/

Or to head to some kind of tower place in a famous city, click this link here.

Navigation Explained:

Down the left (on a PC), you get a menu which looks like this (on a tablet swipe the menu on the left to show/hide it)

  1. Opens an extra menu.
  2. Is a search box (search for a place)
  3. “Voyager” (not like in Star Trek), but this highlights some amazing places to ‘visit’ around the world
  4. “I’m feeling lucky” this takes you to a ‘random’ place on the earth!
  5. “My Places” allows you to import KML files, these were files exported from the desktop version of G Earth
  6. Share the place you are now, click on “Get Link” then “Copy” if you want to share a location with a friend (or paste it into a post below to share with us all)

Other navigation.

On a PC click and drag, Shift+Click+Drag, CTRL+Click+Drag, ALT+Click+Drag

On a tablet/phone, pinch zoom, pinch zoom with 2 fingers, 2 fingers scroll

Bits and bobs

Here is the screen shot I took from Google Earth in full which is used as the thumbnail, you can find that location here.

Music to use maps to:

Cheesecake – Teo

Which you can play from The Inner Circle Music to use Technology to playlist here

The lyrics go: “I look over all the maps trying to escape” although the original (before Eurovision) said “I look at Google maps trying to escape”
