Applies To: Anyone who wants to make a playlist on Spotify, tablets/mobiles/PC
Some of you may have noticed that every so often I post what music I am listening to here on the Inner Circle? This ranges from some Euro-Pop to Jazz to some laid back Country music along with all sorts of other music along the way…
…I thought it would be nice to put these into a Playlist and share it with you all.
I will also add requests from you to the playlist as we go. It has a working title of
“Inner Circle – Music to use Technology to“
In fact, if all goes well you should be able to see the Playlist below and even listen along! (You might need Spotify Installed first)
To do this I’m going to use a program called Spotify. Spotify allows you to play music for free (with adverts) from all around the world. They have all sorts of music β if you have a favourite group, or even just heard something you liked, please let me know and I will add it to the playlist.
Getting started
You will need to install Spotify and create an account. You can download Spotify here. It works on most computers/tablets/smartphones.
Creating the playlist
- On the desktop version of Spotify you create a playlist by going to the File menu and selecting “New Playlist”:
2. You are then asked for a name and description:
3. Fill these in:
(Don’t worry about selecting an image on the left, this will get filled in automatically later. Or if you want a particular image you can choose one now or later.)
4. Click on Save. You should now see the playlist on the left-hand side of Spotify:
Adding to the playlist
Once your playlist is created you want to add some tracks to it, simply search for the artist / track / genre of music you want to add
Then once you have found the right track(s) you can drag and drop them into the playlist.
* Obviously I’m “not just a step. On the boss man’s ladder” as in the classic 9 to 5 hit from Dolly Parton π … although I was up a ladder the other day.
Then repeat these steps until you have added the tracks you want.
Arranging the playlist
You wouldn’t want hard heavy metal music followed by upbeat cheesy pop closely followed by that bird song track that lasts an hour, would you?
Well, once you have added all the tracks to the playlist you can arrange them in a suitable order. Just click on the playlist on the left, then you can drag and drop the tracks up and down in the list until you are happy.
(Click to see full size image)
Sharing the playlist
Once you have created the perfect playlist you might want to share it with friends / family / Inner Circle members. You can do this by clicking on the “share” button…
(click to see full size image)
From here you get loads of options β the easiest one is the “copy link to clipboard” button, this shortcut links people to a website address, and from there they can add the playlist to their Spotify. Just send this link in an email/message to someone and then if they have Spotify they can see the playlist! (CTRL+V is a quick way to paste the link after it has been copied)
Advanced: you can also make a playlist public which lets anyone add any track they want to it. I won’t go into detail here about that, but if you need it drop me a note and I can explain how.
The Inner Circle Playlist
As promised here is the current Inner Circle playlist! I will be adding tracks to it as I share them and I would love for you to get involved too, if you love a piece of music and want to share it, just drop me a comment below with the artist and track name I will try and add it to the playlist!
This is the playlist! You can scroll down and play tracks from it right here in the browser. Click the play button below! (Top left of the playlist box below) You will need Spotify installed to play the full track.
For those with Spotify who want to add the playlist you can find it here: https://open.spotify.com/user/itsbroken/playlist/0KE4T9j1qxOwZVUSTDehG4
Happy Listening

Hi Mike,
Thanks for v helpful email; I would have loved to have been at that kazoo gig! I wonder if your birthday bash in field might lead to the Glastonbury of the north?
I will definitely get one of those chromecasts-especially after just hearing Sigur Ros; I played Ara Batur first-which calmed my troubled breast !also loved hoppipolla and olsen olsen [would love to get subtitles for lyrics !
A game I play-“I’ve seen”, and I’ve seen bill haley, buddy holly, gene vincent, eddie cochran, bobby darin, duane eddy, fats domino….. bob dylan, don mclean, sting [pre police], crosby stills and nash, joni mitchell the band, frank zappa, to name-not all of em.
played this on a cruise ship- a couple named chris rea [they thought they were going to see chris de burgh but got the name mixed up ! ]
I thought sigur ros sound ‘hymnal’.. an old ‘hymnal’ fave is ‘hide in your shell’ by supertramp-recommended!
happy listening [sigur ros are definitely on my playlist!]

Hello
Mike’s just off on holiday for a week or so now, but I’ll make sure he sees this when he gets back. And wow – that’s quite a list – I must admit I haven’t seen any of those live but there are definitely some there I’d like to have seen! (in fact I introduced my two little boys to Bill Haley and the Comets only the other day – they approved!)

Hi Ray
Ahhh Awesome!!! Thanks so much for the suggestions I have added some to the playlist π Good stuff π
If you pay for Spotify they sometimes have lyrics available for songs, or you can often find them on the internet with a Google search…
The Olsen Olsen track lyrics can be found on Google Play here, just scroll past the buy now button…

Hi Mike,
catching up with my emails,as grounded due to illness [shingles!]-and have just printed-
“HOW TO MAKE APLAYLIST WITH SPOTIFY” Will study it, then hope to be up-and-running,
I use Youtube all the time for music, but with ‘inner circle-music to use…’ I would be able
to go straight to my faves?… and play one after the other-‘automatically’??? Sounds great.
Whenever I remember and play an old favourite-or a new ‘classic’, I record them in an
A-Z book, so could suggest quite a collection! [eg.primal scream-country girl,and-the monster
mash by boris picket and the crypt-kickers]
Ultimately, I dream of playing list through T.V. [I have a soundbox!]
Regards

Oh no, hope you are feeling better! Sorry to hear that π
Yes the way I use Spotify is I have a playlist with all the music I like in it, then several other playlists for themes, like country music, rock, a party mix, and a few from events I have done like background music between bands at a mini music festival I ran (for my birthday in my parents field, but still over 100 people came!). I have one playlist called “Kazoo along hits” which a friend used in a DJ set, he gave everyone in the audience a Kazoo to play along with… amazing! Track 1 on that list is Rasputin – Boney M. . followed by Crocodile Rock – Elton John…
If you have a ChromeCast on your TV then you can play Spotify music through your TV. (and also YouTube music and BBC iPlayer and other stuff). It might be worth getting one, you can get one for around Β£20 from Amazon or Β£30 from Google https://www.google.com/intl/en_uk/chromecast/tv/chromecast/ they also do an audio only one if you have speakers you want to plug into… I don’t think that works with Spotify free (it does on the premium one, monthly subscription) https://www.google.com/intl/en_uk/chromecast/audio/
Oh my word I love the track Country Girl by Primal Scream! I’ve also added this to the playlist!! π Good stuff! Thank you! Keep the suggestions coming.

PS I’ve listened to a few tracks by London Grammer and am really enjoying it! Have you heard of Sigur Ros? They have a track called Hoppipolla which is lovely! listen on Spotify here: https://open.spotify.com/track/6eTGxxQxiTFE6LfZHC33Wm
