Computer World, a website I read sometimes, posted a terrible article this week about Windows Updates. It’s so bad I can’t even bring myself to link to it. So…
I just want to make it very clear:
You should keep Windows Updates set to automatic, and install all the updates as soon as they are available.
You should keep any other devices (phones, tablets, watches, baking trays) up to date with the latest software and App updates.
Want to know why?
Read this article (quite geeky) from Troy Hunt Don’t tell people to turn off Windows Update, just don’t.
Seriously @Computerworld, after all we’ve seen this year with unpatched machines you’re recommending this?! https://t.co/zM3zMZlyYV https://t.co/JrDrRJVNWt

Thank you for listening, I just needed to get that out of my system.

Hi Mike, thanks for that quick response. The phone and kindle do not show virgin on their settings. The lap top shows virgin on the wi fi and the ether net, however i can only get my e-mails with the ether net cable plugged in.The lights on the hub are all working and lit up.Thanks,John.

Hi John
This sounds like a problem with WiFi on your Virgin router, it might be best to turn off the router, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on again. 🙂
Try turning that off and back on again and we can go from there…
Thanks
Mike 🙂

the last windows 10 update removed my wi/fi auto connect to my laptop from my hub and set it to manual selection. Now i have to use an ether net cable to receive my wi/fi.In so doing i lose wi,fi connection to my iphone and kindlle. For an old but keen inexperienced user with very limited abiity on these items and a great deal of effort by engineers to sort this problem why can the originaauto setting not be re set?

Hi John
It sounds like there might be a few things going on here.
Can your phone/kindle see the WiFi network in the list of networks to connect to?
When you click on your Laptop to connect to a WiFi network can you see yours?
Does your WiFi router have lights on that say WiFi is active?
Sorry to ask so many questions, I just don’t want to start giving you the wrong answer…
Thanks

Good Afternoon. I want to use Windows Live Mail, although I always use Outlook/Hotmail. I tried today (again) and a message appeared saying Hotmail is not recognised. I tried clicking on the E Mail address (ie [Admin: removed]@hotmail.co.uk) but no success. How do I get into WLM to amend/add an E Mail address. Thanks guys.

Hi James
I’m afraid Windows Live Mail no longer works Outlook.com/Hotmail. You would either need to use Microsoft Office Outlook, or a program like Thunderbird. Or use their webmail (through a web browser like Edge) at https://outlook.com (the webmail option is the one I like).
You can read more about Thunderbird here: https://www.pcinnercircle.co.uk/index.php/2016/07/thunderbird-email-client-installing-and-setting-up/
Hopefully, this will get you up and running.
Thanks

Hi Mike. I just knew it! Made a right old hash of things. Didn’t have much help from Edge, and my details are not recognised by Thunderbird when going through the procedure. How to? Thanks.

Hi James
What happens f you try to login in your hotmail/outlook email address at https://www.outlook.com does this work for you ? It’s probably the easiest/best way to get and reply to emails…
Let me know if you need something more or if that isn’t working? I’m a little confused as to whats not going right here sorry.
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mark. I am good at confusing people!!!!! I can still log in using the Outlook Link above and that is after click on the Edge Icon on the Task bar. My problem is that when I message a reply to a Company I am transferred to the Windows Live Hot mail Page and after typing the message and press Send, a window appears to say it cannot be sent as Hotmail is not accepted and I cannot change to Hotmail address. James.

no problem at all, sometimes my brain doesn’t quite work out what is happening. Ahh so is this happening when you click on and email link on a webpage like this one [email protected] ? if so it could be that Windows still thinks that Windows Live Mail is your default email program.
If you could check for me that is probably a good starting point. You can read about how to change it (or just check) here https://www.pcinnercircle.co.uk/index.php/2016/08/how-to-change-a-default-program-windows-10/ if Email is set to “Windows Live Mail” you might want to try changing it to Edge or something else to see if it works…
Sorry I think I’m causing confusion here, lets start with checking what the default email program is set to and go from there.
So sorry
Thanks
Mike 🙂
